Religion is a major part of most people’s lives throughout Evaristus, but nowhere is this more true than the Sancitifed State of Nigredo. Founded after a brutal civil war by St. Eveline the Pure three centuries ago. The story goes that the conflict developed after Eveline witnessed the previous regime’s brutality towards the common man and as the clergy tried to shield and heal them, the priestesses were massacred in what is now called the Crimson Dawn. This makes the current nation highly distrustful and even to the point of outright banning of arcane casters.
Due to their reverence to their founding Saint, the leader of Nigredo is someone the priests and priestesses appoint or declare as Eveline reincarnated, her Avatar. While the Protopriestess is a leader without limits in the technical sense, but the clergy make all the day-to-day decisions and handle affairs. This can cause notable friction.
The people of Nigredo are devout, mostly due to the fact that those who are vocally skeptical or not in line with the ideology of the majority are not heard from again. The overall mood in Nigredo is a sickly sweet facade with a dismal cloud of uneasiness and fear. Emigration is not prohibited but is being put on stricter and stricter limits as the secret police, spoke of in whispers and dubbed “The Deacons,” silence those who would defy the revered clergy.</P
